DEC’s Youth Transition Summer Program will begin on July 6th!
To help youth with disabilities transition (or prepare to transition in the future) from High School to adult life, we offer the Young and Empowered summer program.
About the Program:
Every Tuesday and Thursday – July 7th through August 13th – (except the week of July 27th)
11:00 am to 3:00 pm (lunch is provided)
Free program for ages 16-21. You MUST have an IEP at an Lancaster or Lebanon School district.
Schedule just announced!
Tuesday July 7th and Thursday July 9th: Get to know eachother and Independent Living! We’ll have introductions and ice breakers. We’ll learn about Independent Living (IL) and IL skills including budgeting. On Thursday, our afternoon session will be “Money Sense” with Metro Bank.
Tuesday July 14th and Thursday July 16th: Our second week, we’ll have a Self-Advocacy Presentation by Donna Hornberger from The ARC and an Introduction to Sign Language class. For our afternoons, we’ll try out tie dye arts and crafts. And on Thursday, we’ll have a demonstration by the Lancaster Mounted Police and their horses at Longs Park!
Tuesday July 21st and Thursday July 23rd: We’ll start with a Changing Hands Presentation and Program with Terry Heffilfinger from United Cerebral Palsy. Then we’ll have an afternoon cooking class. We’ll also have a UDS Service Dogs presentation and a fitness introduction by Gold’s Gym. Just to make sure we haven’t forgotten, we’ll have a refresher course on our Sign Language.
We won’t have any classes on July 28th and July 30th.
Tuesday August 4th and Thursday August 6th: Lindy Malin will join us for a Craft Day with Lindy Malin. Brian Long of the ARDC will join us for a class on Emergency Preparedness and the OVR will join us for an all day job readiness class on Thursday.
Tuesday August 11th and Thursday August 13th: For our last week, we’ll focus on health and nutrition and general IL activities. We’ll have a sewing class and a game day. To complete our time together, we’ll have a DEC favorite event – a pizza party!
