The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting 2.7 million individuals across the country to assist with the 2020 census count. This spring, the Census Bureau will launch the largest 2020 Census field operation. Known as Nonresponse Follow-up, Census takers are tasked with knocking on doors to follow up with households who have not responded to the census questionnaire.
Applications are being accepted for both field and office positions. You can apply for these positions by going to https://2020census.gov/en/jobs.html. The office positions are more limited will be located in area census offices. The role of these offices is to recruit, select, hire, train, manage and pay all office and field staff who work within the designated of the geographic area assigned to the office.
The Census Bureau is starting to open almost 250 offices to support the 2020 Census. As these offices become ready for business, they are listed at 2020census.gov/jobs/pay-and-locations.
If you apply for a position and are being considered, you will receive a telephone interview. If offered a job, you will receive instructions on the next steps via email. Applicants must complete paperwork online and make an appointment to get fingerprinted for the background check. Once offered a position, there is a period of time prior to the start date to allow time for the background clearance process. There are also management positions available. To search those jobs, go to USAjobs.gov.
A majority of the applications will remain active throughout the 2020 Census and may be considered as positions become available. If you’re interested in applying but do not have access to the internet, give DEC a call at 717-394-1890 to reserve a time to use one of our computers.
