We like to take a moment on our blog to introduce you to the hardworking people that make up our staff at the Disability Empowerment Center. Today we sit down with Gina Baum, a Peer Mentor at DEC. How did you end up working at DEC?
There was an ad in the paper for a peer mentor. I was looking for employment where I felt I could use my abilities to help others with live independently.
Why did you want to work for DEC?
Because I believe in who they are as an agency and what they stand for.
What is your job title and what do you do at DEC?
I am a Peer Mentor. I assist in helping consumers achieve their goals by educating them and teaching them.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Watching people succeed.
What does “empowerment” mean to you?
Taking control of your own life.
