Each month we take a moment to highlight a DEC Consumer, their experience with our Center and our staff, and their Success. This month we spoke with Tomeka Conway.
After calling another Center that said they wouldn’t help me, I called DEC and spoke with Barb Feaser.
My family’s home had burned down and I was homeless at the time, and Barb made me feel confident that I could gain my independence.
My primary goal was housing and DEC was able to help me find a place to stay, along with food and clothes. I owe the Disability Empowerment Center so much!
After helping to find a place to stay, Barb continued to help me with my independence by teaching me to ride the bus, teaching me to cook, and teaching me budgeting. They continue to help me learn all of the skills I need to live on my own!
DEC and Barb Feaser have been by my side for everything – not only teaching me how to do things but showing me and being with me every step of the way.
DEC means everything to me! I do not know where I would be without their help. It means so much to me that there are people out there who care.
Empowerment means the freedom to live how I want to live and I am so grateful for it!
