We offer one on one assistance to individuals with all types of disabilities in working toward self-identified independent living goals. Because these goals are specific to each individual’s needs, they are as varied as people are different. The following are some examples of goals that DEC has helped consumer’s to achieve:
We have helped find housing for consumers who were homeless.
We have helped consumers apply to, get accepted and start in college.
We have helped consumers find jobs.
We have helped individuals get assistive devices including power chairs, canes, hospital beds, communication devices, shower chairs, wheel chairs, and more, so that they could live independently.
We have helped individuals with all types of transportation needs.
We have done mobility training for an individual who is blind, and never left his home due to fear. He is now out in the community often and feels like he is able to get around without fear.
We have helped high school students after graduation with employment, getting their first apartment, budgeting, and Independent Living skills so they are now living on their own.
We have helped people get Assistive Technology devices and learn to use these devices at our Center.
We have helped people find resources for necessary home modifications.
We have helped people learn to cook for themselves.
We’ve helped a consumer learn to how to sew.
We’ve even helped someone go skydiving!
We have also helped consumers meet goals with: waiver services, nursing home transition, employment, youth transitions/ IEP’s, advocacy, peer mentoring/counseling, mobility training, and social/recreational events.
